What does style mean? 5 Style tips for A Man of Style!

A Man of Style is a blog that it's intention is to inspire men to look their best!
Style defined as the way we express ourselves, which is not only in the way we look, but also the way we behave, think, communicate etc.
I personally don't believe we need to be "fashionable", trend victims or social followers in order to look our best. All we need is to care for it, listen to ourselves and have fun with it....i guess that could easily be a life mantra as well :)
Today i wanted to share 5 style tips that are part of a list i have put together recently that includes my Top 12 Style Tips. The complete list is available when you sign up for our BOAZ shirts mailing list and it includes a 10% discount on any of our custom made shirts to give you a kick start in building a better style for yourself. Click here to sign up now.
Enjoy these style tips, I hope they will help you with looking and feeling better.
Please feel free to comment or email me directly with any questions, suggestions or thoughts you might have.
  1. PERSONAL STYLE – This is where it all starts! Trends and dress rules are just suggestions. In order to look good you HAVE to OWN your look! You’ve been hired for your job because of your personal set of skills, right? It's the same thing with clothing, being stylish shows your individual flair. It will get you noticed for who you are. Whether you’re classic and conservative or more daring and outgoing doesn’t matter… as long as it’s YOUR PERSONAL STYLE!
  2. FIT, FIT, FIT! - Fit is everything! No matter what the brand name, how well made, expensive or trendy an item is, if it doesn’t fit well it will not look good! An item too big or baggy will overwhelm your frame, and in something too small you’ll look uncomfortable and closer to a sausage than a model. FIT IS STYLE! Therefore, in order to look stylish, regardless of your body type, always make sure that your clothing fits properly!

How to 4th of July style?

Dear readers, in order to keep your style juices flowing and keep things interesting and fun around here, A Man of Style decided to have an addition to our authors.... which so far included only me :)... and what could be a better time to do it than Independence day???
So sit back, unbutton your jacket, release your tie and allow me to introduce Lis Collins! Lis...they are all yours.....

Ah, 4th of July. Time for burgers and barbecuing, parades and streamers and fireworks of course! It's the one time of year you can dress like a flag and get away with it. But who wants to look like a flag? Thanks Betsy Ross, but no thanks. Here are a few patriotic options, sans flag.
In the 5 boroughs there are two events that are synonymous with 4th of July. Start your day off right at Coney Island and watch master eaters devour hot dogs. End it in style at Hudson Terrace rooftop with a few cocktails.
Hot Dog Contest
On one end of the cultural spectrum, there's the annual Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest, in Coney Island. Contestants come from all over the world on this sacred national holiday to do what Americans do best- eat. Legend has it the contest began in 1916 as a way to settle a dispute on patriotism between 4 immigrants. This may or may not be true, but I still can't think of a better way to spend the 4th than with historic roller coasters, hot dogs, and the beach
The ketchup may be flying, but with this red gingham buttondown from Asos, you've nothing to worry about!

My Style Journal - Labor Day brunch in the city!

Over the last few months i have neglected My style journal segment .....quite honestly i dont have a good enough excuse as to why i did other than maybe just laziness.....(Am i being too honest???).
Any ways, what matters is that its back and I promise to make a bigger afford to keep it going.
It was Labor Day weekend and the weather in the city was perfect for an out and about stroll! The occasion was a brunch with My parents in law and the look i went for is just fun and easy..... yet off-course stylish! So, I'm wore a chambray military shirt from my BOAZ men's shirt line which is a shirt i have worn quite a lot over the summer (dont tell anyone....), the combination of its luxurious fabric along with the slim fit and the military details makes it easy to either dress it up or dress it down. To support a less serious feel i paired it with a slim fitted shorts that i made in a gray and Lt..blue pinstriped fabric. The fabric has a slight sheen that goes well with the sheen of the chambray. I than added these canvas striped sneakers that keeps the look light yet still and as always stylish....

 Military chambray Shirt - BOAZ
Grey and light blue pinstriped shorts - BOAZ
High sneakers - PF Flyers

Findings - Raf Simmons Ribbon Detail button down shirt

Shirt sleeve shirt from Raf Simmons on Forward
WHY: The dilemma - summer is out its hot but you still want/need to wear a nice button down shirt for work/pleasure or even under a suit.
The problem - There are not too many short sleeves button downs that look good, mostly because of the way the sleeves fit. Most brands make the sleeves either too wide or too long or both.
Do you wear short sleeves button downs? Answer the question on my Facebook page.
Possible solution - This shirt from Raf Simmons looks right, the sleeve length seem to hit a good spot and since the shirt has a slim fitted body the armholes are high and that results in the sleeves being narrower and fitted where even someone who haven't hit the gym for a while will look like he just finished a work out.
From a design perspective its quite a cool shirt, contemporary narrow collar, slim fit body and a contrast trim that will make you stand out. (and as you can tell from my shirt line i like slim fitted shirts with contrast trim). Although i would say that the trim in the hem could have been skipped in order to make this shirt more commercial and useful. It would have allowed to tuck the shirt in if needed, and also since the hem is straight depends on your body length it might cut you in a wrong spot and the contrast ribbon will than draw more attention to your hips. Obviously this shirt is meant to be worn untucked, and i think it will also look really cool with a dressy type shorts like these one form Raf Simmons..... and i wouldn't role out a thin tie especially with white shirt version....
That's how a short sleeve should fit
INFO: 100% cotton, Made in Italy, Button front closure, Contrast fabric detail.
PRICE: $348.00
WHERE: Forward by Revolve

My style journal - week thirteen - Sunday Brunch

This fall season is my kind of fall....nice weekend with temperature in the mid 50's and the sun is out! Perfect weather for layering which is what i was going for in here, i was on my way to brunch and just piled up few pieces together not knowing how cold or warm will it be outside and i think it all came together pretty well regardless of the mishmash of colors and textures and despite the strong bright color shoes....
Do you think so too???

This week I'm wearing:
Down blazer - John Barritt
Pinstripes vest - BOAZ
Cotton button down shirt - NSF
Gauze scarf - H&M

My style journal - week twelve - Trench Coat

This look is a mix of items i have been blogging about for these last few months. A couple of weeks ago i had a post about the Trench coat, and how to incorporate it into your wardrobe. My trench coat is a casual cotton trench with contrast top stitching and buttons, but since i don't wear suits in my daily life it works perfect for me. I added suspenders which i have posted about last week, and just had them hanging down my hips as an accessory to add a bit of a militant touch... and yes i know most gentlemen will probably not approve of the way I'm using the suspenders ....but, oh well this blog is all about personal style, right???
I love this gingham military style shirt, it's one of my favorite shirts that i have made so far, the fit is amazing, its slim but very comfortable, and the details like the long tabs in the back of the sleeve or the tab+button in the back collar or even the red buttonholes on the cuffs are subtle but still stand out just enough to make it unique.
The black corduroy vest added a fall season touch and made it more interesting when i took off the coat...The jeans are skinny in dark blue and i liked that they are bunched up it supported the militant/roughness feel of the look.
This week I'm wearing:
Trench coat - Report Collection
Corduroy vest - BOAZ
Purple gingham shirt - BOAZ
Dark jeans - Levis
Boots - Paul Smith
Suspenders - Gillmons

Spring 2011 NY Fashion week - Simon Spurr

A couple days ago I have posted Simon Spurr's inspiration for the spring  season which in his words sounded like that: "exploring the boundaries between art and fashion, the collection mixes Lucio Fontana - inspired prints and sweaters with British military undertones and YSL elegance.” The result on the runway was Great! I thought the collection had a lot of great pieces, I loved the suits especially the three piece ones in either slicky fabrics, solid colors or in the plaids (loved the 2 piece plaid suit above which reminded me a lot of my new suit.....i wonder if he reads this blog????),
also thought the sophisticated mustard trench coat and  the light and clean sweaters in army colors were great. I wasn't as crazy about his casual items like the denim pants and didn't care for the scarfs (it's too much of Brooklyn hipsters style... and we had enough of that). As far as the inspiration goes you can definitely see a strong YSL elegance and the color story was clearly inspired by  Lucio Fontana prints and British military undertones.
Over all I really loved the collection, it has a great European touch but with American influences all executed in high quality.
More photos after the jump.

My style journal - week eleven - NY Fashion week

Fashion week is here and I attended some  fashion shows this week and here is one of the looks i chose to wear. I must say i liked this look a lot, i felt it had casual mixed in with a bit of dressed and a lot of fun! The white jacket (which is by the way a $69.95 jacket from H&M) is a stand out piece that i struggled to make it look natural and not too uptight or forced,  i first tried it over some plaid and gingham  pants and than a dressier navy pants but it was all way to serious for the occasion, so i finally went for the dark skinny jeans (511) from Levi's (which i got for $44 on sale and which fit really great.... much better than other more expensive jeans in the market) and the shiny pointy shoes that added flair and fun to the party...
The shirt is a BOAZ shirt (the classic style) that as i mentioned last week soon will be available for purchasing online.

My style journal - week ten - Creative Black Tie

This weekend our good friends got married and the dress code called for "creative black tie"...so i wanted to share with you my version of it. I made this jacket as part of a purple velvet suit (purple is one of my favorite colors, especially a deep shade like the one on this jacket) that i wore to my wedding almost 5 years ago, but since than i didn't have a chance to wear it again until this weekend. When i tried it on last week i wasn't as crazy about the pants so i paired the jacket with these black silk pants (that are part of a silk suit i made my self about 6 years ago) and i really liked the combination, it worked out perfectly, right?
The shirt is a BOAZ design as well, and is a fitted (with no darts) white Egyptian cotton twill shirt that i made about a month ago and that was it's debut..... BTW as we speak I'm working on having that shirt along with some of my other men's shirts designs available to buy online, so stay tune for that....

My style journal - week nine - The gingham world.....

As you know from my previous post, on my list for this spring i had a craving for gingham shirt, since i love making shirts, and after i didn't  find the right combo of style, fit and color shirt that i had in mind...i decided to make my own gingham shirt... i wanted a sharp military inspired shirt with a comfortable fit and a smart sophisticated look, a shirt that i can dress up or down for everyday look. Therefore i went with purple (one of my favorite colors) in a gingham Egyptian cotton fabric, a military inspired details of the  front button-flap patch pockets and epaulet tabs on the shoulders, and to seal the deal i added my signature - the extra long buttoned sleeve tabs......the result is a well fitted button down shirt with a classic feel and a contemporary twist. For this week's look i simply paired the shirt with my dark raw jeans and a black pointy boots.

This week I'm wearing:
Purple gingham shirt - Boaz
Raw denim pant - Boaz
Boots - Juno New york

My Style Journal - week seven...The new suit!

First i would like to apologize for the lack of writing in the last few weeks. It was a very busy time for me at work and i just couldn't find the time to write...the good news are that I'm back and hopefully stronger and better!
This week's my style journal presents an outfit that is probably the last time i can wear this season before storing it until next fall. As i mentioned in my last post about the importance of the vest (which i was very glad to hear that have inspired quite a lot of you out there....), i love the combo of pant and vest, what i call....

The power of the vest!

The vest (or the waistcoat as its being referred to in the UK) is the single, most versatile and smartest clothing item a guy can have. Mostly known for its role as the unappreciated member of the three-piece suit family, the vest made a move and over the years declared its independence, separated from it's family and developed its own life. Adding grandeur and sophistication to almost any outfit, from making the casual jeans and T look stylish and unique or when paired with a suit adding sharpness and a twist making it dressier and even more powerful.
For me it all started with my father (RIP). He loved three-piece suits and had a few custom made for him. One in particular, a gray wool pinstriped was my absolute favorite. I had been eying it for a while when sometime in my early 20's the suit got too small for him and I inherited it....the jacket was too big, the pants needed to be taking in but the vest....well, the vest was

My style journal - week six

This week I went for casual cool.... simple and comfy!
I love these pants , I made them about 5 years ago as an army color version of jeans. I used to make these jeans that always had some knee patches with stitching and padding details, inspired by motorcycle pants. Over the years, all the washes and the wearing made the details on the knees and back pockets to look even better while the fabric gotten softer, making the pant age very well. They work well with boots or snickers like the leather converse. The converse style in my opinion is the simplest yet coolest sport shoe that was ever made. When i was a teenager

My style journal - week five

I know i have been slacking a bit on my style journal in the last couple of weeks...sorry, i was a bit busy.
This week the look is - Bohemian cool! These last couple of years vests became a favorite item in my wardrobe, and for every pant that i made my self lately i made a vest to go with...its a cool concept!.... They can than be worn together or separately. When worn together i can dress it up with a dress shirt tucked in and a tie (I went to few weddings dress up like that), or I can dress it down to look easy and cool by adding a funky button down shirt and leave it untucked (like in the photo below). I like the shirt showing under the vest, it breaks the line of the pant+vest and makes it less formal and more fun and approachable.....
check out the details on this shirt i have on (click on the photo to enlarge), the directions of the stripes adding fun to a classic shirting fabric....I love this shirt!
And how about these shoes.....ha?

This week I'm wearing:
Black corduroy Vest + Pant - Boaz
Stripe shirt - Boaz

My style Journal - Week one

Ever since I can remember I loved clothes and enjoyed dressing. Eventually, this led me to a career as a fashion designer. Over the years I developed my own individual style. To describe it in words will not do it any justice since, literary descriptions are not my strongest skill (and here I am writing a blog and expecting you to read it, ha?). But since my goal in creating this blog is to inspire you to discover and develop your own sense of style and create your own unique voice I feel that the best way is to lead by example. Therefore I was looking for a creative way to communicate my style to you (after all, I will first need to gain your trust in my credibility before I can suggest and advice you). Well, unfortunately the idea I came up with is not as creative as I hoped for but it’s definitely one that will get my point across and hopefully will inspire you the same way others out there inspire me. So today I am starting my style Journal where i will post a weekly photo with my favorite outfit of the week for your review….. I highly encourage you to leave your feedback and would love to hear your thoughts and input …whether it's good or bad! Cause recognizing what you like and what not is the first step in building your new wardrobe, I hope you’ll enjoy it and hopefully together we will inspire others…..

This week I'm wearing:
Black corduroy vest - BOAZ
Pinstriped cotton shirt - BOAZ
Gold Cufflinks - vintage (my wife's grandfather)
Black diamond tie - Calvin Klein
Raw Boot cut Jeans - BOAZ
Boots - Juno New York
