How to 4th of July style?

Dear readers, in order to keep your style juices flowing and keep things interesting and fun around here, A Man of Style decided to have an addition to our authors.... which so far included only me :)... and what could be a better time to do it than Independence day???
So sit back, unbutton your jacket, release your tie and allow me to introduce Lis Collins! Lis...they are all yours.....

Ah, 4th of July. Time for burgers and barbecuing, parades and streamers and fireworks of course! It's the one time of year you can dress like a flag and get away with it. But who wants to look like a flag? Thanks Betsy Ross, but no thanks. Here are a few patriotic options, sans flag.
In the 5 boroughs there are two events that are synonymous with 4th of July. Start your day off right at Coney Island and watch master eaters devour hot dogs. End it in style at Hudson Terrace rooftop with a few cocktails.
Hot Dog Contest
On one end of the cultural spectrum, there's the annual Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest, in Coney Island. Contestants come from all over the world on this sacred national holiday to do what Americans do best- eat. Legend has it the contest began in 1916 as a way to settle a dispute on patriotism between 4 immigrants. This may or may not be true, but I still can't think of a better way to spend the 4th than with historic roller coasters, hot dogs, and the beach
The ketchup may be flying, but with this red gingham buttondown from Asos, you've nothing to worry about!
These crisp white shorts from Aubin & Willis are prone to folly but don't worry, we've got you covered.
No one looks cool with a sunburn. Keep the sun off your face with this panama hat from Barneys and shades by SUPER.
Navy Chuck Taylors and a subtly patriotic belt tie the look together and have you set till sundown. Don't eat too many hot dogs!
Sundown Fireworks
Sundown means fireworks! The display over the Hudson is one of the biggest in the country. Formerly over the East River, it was moved to the west side of Manhattan in 2009, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the area. A prime location for watching the hullabaloo is the Hudson Terrace, right on the water.  You're gonna want to step up your outfit for evening- check out what we've got for you.
Start off with a versatile and classic white shirt; you really can't beat made to order from Boaz
Red slacks from Rag and Bone spice up the ensemble and 4th of July is a great excuse to wear red pants!
The show starts at 9:20 and you don't want to miss a moment. Be prompt with these appropriately colored watches from Nixon.
Pierre Hardy Chukkas will keep you looking fresh throughout the night and a blazer from Oliver Spencer will keep away any river chills.
Top the look off with a smart tie from UO, and fun cufflinks from Paul Smith and you're ready to go!
Happy 4th of July everyone!

  1. Yeah, great look...if you're a "Wham" tribute act.

No grown man should be seen in little white shorts and a tight gingham shirt. Beyond seven year old girls, there is no place for this horror.

    :)

    1. Alex, thanks for your comment....the 80's are all around us so the Wham reference is kinda valid, although Wham used to wear much shorter shorts :)
If you actually follow the link for the white shorts you will see that on the body they are not that little or tight, and the length is relatively long. I can see how in this photo they might look little but they are just slim fitting + straight leg. The same goes for the gingham shirt, its just slim fitted.
After all, what matters is really how you'd wear these items together and not how old are you. For example if you'd wear that same outfit with the shirt being one size bigger, keep the top buttons of the shirt open rather than buttoned all the way up, fold the sleeves just 2 times rather than all the way above the elbow, and keep the shirt untucked than this same look will be relaxed and "older".....Happy 4th!

  2. You're a good sport for not taking offence, Boaz!

All points well taken, and after all, one should always have one's own style, regardless of what others think. For me, this lot's as gay as a rainbow, but I'd take the shirt with a pair of light jeans or chinos, and proper shoes: how about a canvas and leather spectator like this?

    Have a good day. :)

    1. Alex, Hope you had a great 4th! Why would i take offense? I didn't think you were trying to offend us, your comment was legitimate and i encourage any feedback. After all this is an open discussion and you said it best "one should always have one's own style, regardless of what others think"! For me this is what style is all about, its much more inspiring when every person change it up to work for their style....
I like your suggestion, especially the shoes cause they really give the look a more mature feel. Btw to stay with shorts, these blue linen shorts can do the trick as well, they have a looser fit and are great for summer. http://www.mrporter.com/product/196573
Enjoy the rest of your week!
