Spring shoes - Loafers

Donald J Pliner
Spring is teasing us here in NY, one day its here and the other its hiding behind another grey cold day but no matter how long it will try and hide its just a matter of weeks maybe days before it will surrender itself. These last few sunny days made me start thinking about spring wardrobe....which I'm sure most of you started that same thinking process as well.
How about we'll start from the bottom up...with shoes! More specifically slip-ons that are typically low, lace-less shoes which are commonly known as a loafers. I personally not a big fan of the typical loafers which we all know as the Moccasin, I'm not sure what it is that i don't like about them, could be the tassels or could be just the fact that they are so common and main stream that they lost their unique edge in my view. I like the ones that comes in colors (a perfect way to show style and be edgy but still in a subtle way) that you can wear with long pants, jeans or even with shorts. Here are some of my favorites for the season....Enjoy!

Say NO to Sandals! - Summer shoes from B store

Raffia shoes from B store
This post meant to bring up a point that i feel very strongly about - say no to Sandals! I know its summer and its hot, humid and sweaty and all you want is to have as less cover as possible and that goes for your feet as well..... but men's sandals are just not cool to wear outside the pool, beach or your apartment. Yes, I saw that on the runway designers showed lots of sandals, and yes i know that some of these sandals are probably more expensive and of a better quality than lots of other shoes out there.... but they still look bad! I have yet to see a pair that didnt look either too nerdy or too feminine......and not a word about Flip Flops!
So instead of just pointing out what is not cool....here are just few other summer alternatives from B store in London that you can wear for work or pleasure, with long or short pants, with or without socks and still keep your look cool and your feet even cooler.

Findings - Viktor & Rolf lace up dress shoes

Lace up dress shoes from Viktor & Rolf on SSENSE
WHY: The unique steel blue color of these shoes will get you to be noticed where the classic rounded toe shape the little heel and the quality of the shoe will balance it out and will keep you stylish but not stand out too much. I think they are quite versatile and can work for both classic and dressy look or for casual and more daring style as well, and i can see a conservative guy sporting them with a button down dress shirt, a linen blazer and dark jeans while a guy with more of a downtown flair throw on a chambray or plaid shirt over a flat front fitted chino with folded hem and no socks...... i even think they will brighten up a dark navy suit in a nice sophisticated way...definitely a must have for spring!

Saint Patrick's Day fix

I'm Christian, have no connection to Ireland and I'm not really a big fan of Alcohol so clearly this day is not a favorite of mine.....but i do love the color green (its one of my favorite colors) and as a soccer fan my favorite team from Israel wears green so this post is in celebration of the color green more than all the above.
So my suggestion for a st. Patrick fix is somewhat subtle and a bit more sophisticated and mature than just dropping the green color in bulk all over the place, which if you are intrested in that you can get this shirt or this jeans or even this full on St.Patrick's pant from Bonobos. These classic saddle shoes from Cole Haan would actually be a great investment not just for this green holiday but as an awesome spring shoe to wear with a nice linen suit or a casual chino and can go preppy with a plaid shirt and a bowtie.
Available on Zappos for $198.00, also check out the other color option, the dark purple is my favorite.....

Opening ceremony Fall/Winter 2010 shoes collection

Opening Ceremony in my opinion is slowly but surely building itself to be the next Barney's... but off course with a lot more fun and less attitude...therefore their new footwear collection  which is available now online is just a natural addition and just like almost everything else we have seen from OC it has a new feel but still easy and not pretentious! The colors and materials breath new contemporary feel into classic styles and even me who is not a big fan of desert boots must admit that some of them here make me drool..... like the

Findings - Memorial weekend shopping

This Memorial day weekend did not just bring in the summer but also some great sales (well at list for my wife and i....) So off course i want to share findings with you...these will be great to include in my style journal posts over the summer....The first stop was Bloomingdale's, actually i was there last week and over heard that there is a sale coming up over the weekend so i took my time to prepare for it, walked around trying things on and planing my future purchases, and let me tell you that plan worked perfectly...

As usual and (as i mentioned million times before) I just CAN NOT resist shoes...  these beauties in shocking blue are from Florsheim by Duckie Brown, and to be honest i am not so crazy about their shape because i usually like my shoes thinner and less bulky but the color...oh man the color! .....talking about a summer statement!... and for $70.56... my  blue suede shoes!

5 easy ways to express yourself!

The secret for creating your personal look is knowing how to express yourself through style! As I’m sure you all experienced before in life, when you stay true to yourself, you are at your best! It’s then when you are an impact to others and inspire them. Well, it’s kind of the same thing when it comes to style. Since expressing one’s self is not the same for everyone (personality, age, social status, career and so…) every one has to find his way of doing it, so here are 5 ways to add a personal touch to your look and express the REAL YOU!

SHOES – I already spoke about the importance of shoes in creating a look (and about my personal obsession with them…) in my previous posts about what to look for when buying shoes. So, here is a quick example that will sum it up… think of how personalizing your car's wheels impact your car's all over style, the same thing with shoes. Your quality and taste will always shine through your shoes and it is a subtle way to make a style statement. Choose to invest in quality rather than quantity, well made shoes are more comfortable, they last long and usually are easier to refurbish. Advise: Look for thin-soled and avoid thick, rubber soled shoes. Own at list one pair that stands out in color, material or shape for all these times when you just need a spark to light a classic simple look. Last, but not least, take care of your shoes, a quality pair that is not kept well that is wrinkled, dirty and dusty will work against you!

BELT – I personally enjoy wearing belts even when they don’t serve me with a functional need. They can either blend with the colors of the outfit or add a complimentary color to it. Try to match your belt to your footwear either in color, material or style, that will lock out your whole look and will show your attention to details. Be careful with big, shiny buckles and wide belts, those are usually work well only for a casual look pairing with jeans, khaki pant and alike.

BAG - In recent years we have seen how bags became almost an integral part of the way we dress. It might have started with the fact that we carry much more with us now days (cell phones, personal computers….) but over time men became more open to them, designers became more creative with them and now bags became an important accessory that can add a splash of fun and individuality to one's style. What bag to get? that depends on your needs, your job and your bank account, but your choices range in colors, sizes, shapes and materials. From a conservative black leather briefcase for a classic business look to a funky printed canvas messenger bag or a young professional style.

FRAGRANCE – Don’t under estimate the sense of smell. When meeting someone for the first time our sense of smell DOES have a saying in the all over evaluation and can add a sophistication to one's impact. When choosing the right one for you, consider your body’s chemistry, try a sample on the inside of your wrist and walk with it for a couple of hours before deciding (if you find yourself walking on your own while the other side of the street is packed...i think there is a clear conclusion here...). In order to make it your own, the cologne is best when combined with your natural scent, so when applying, spray just a mist in the air and then walk into it with no clothes on (just remember to close your curtains first... ). Also keep in mind that the scent should really only be smelt by people who are in a one yard radius.....you are not an air freshener and you’re not suppose to cover for others bad odor (unless it is your job and you are getting paid to do it….)

HAIRSTYLE - Choosing the right hairstyle can make a huge impact on your look! A common mistake for men is working against the hair type. For example if your hair is curly, let it be, use a hair product, cut it short but don't fight it (believe me if it didn't change so far, i doubt it will ever will...). One other common mistake to avoid is hiding what you don't have. If your hair is thinning or receding, it's a natural process, it says nothing about you so don't try to grow it to cover the thinning patches or to show that you still have hair, just embrace it and cut it short. It will than blend better instead of highlighting what you don't have and you will appear as a confident man who is very secure in your self.

So, the next time you're getting ready for a business meeting, first date or any other important event, look at the mirror and ask yourself what can i do to better express my individuality? we are all unique and special in our own ways so why not show it in our style???

Designer of the week - week one - Paul Smith

Today I’m starting a weekly post called Designer of the week. In this post I will feature designers that I love and ones that inspire me. Some of which are household names that play a major influence in your current wardrobe, along side others that have been under the radar and might influence your next shopping spree.
I’d like to start our little private Wikipedia with a British Designer. To be fair with you, I'm a bit bias (hope you'll forgive me) because I ADORE the BRITISH CULTURE!
It all started with growing up in the seventies and early eighties and being exposed to the British punk rock movement. The music, clothes, art and the whole anti establishment philosophy....what can better inspire and fuel an over zealous teenager‘s rebellious nature? Over the years the metals and zippers evolved into button up shirts and slick boots and as I grew up my appreciation and passion for the traditional British style was born.
A designer that played a major role in my love for Briticism was the legendary Sir Paul Smith (He was knighted in 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II) and his multi stripe signature. At the age of 17 after a terrible accident while cycling (which was his passion till than), Paul became friends with students from the local art college. They introduced him to the colorful and exciting world of Mondrian, Warhol, the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and others. This introduction lead to the opening of his first boutique within two years (1970) with the encouragement of his than girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife).
Since then his style of traditional classic Englishman, flavored with a sophisticated sense of humor (using the Mini as a design motif) and a stroke of pop art established him as the preeminent British designer and one of the most influential designers in the world. The line is currently sold in 35 countries with 12 different collections including women's, accessories and furniture among others. Despite universal success, Paul still remains the designer and is fully involved in every aspect of the business, retaining a personal touch often lost in companies of a similar size. Which in my opinion, is a sign of a true artist who does what he really loves and passionate about. Oh.... and he even writes his own blog where he shares his latest activities and projects with his fans.
The Paul Smith shops provide a peak into Paul's artistic world and vision, they are an inspirational place to visit (highly recommended for every man). Showcasing jewelery, books, art, antiques and an array of interesting and beautiful products along side work of other British artists as well as Paul’s personal collections of art or curios. His NY men's store on 5th Ave. was one of the first stores i visited in the city and became one of my favorite stops since we moved right around the corner from it. Our dog jumbo is still confused as to why i always walk him on that same block when the dog run and his favorite marking spot are both in the opposite direction..... I wish he would understand that this is one of few stores that i find very hard to leave empty handed and that always get my creative juices flowing.
So, before you start your Paul Smith shopping experience below are some of my favorite items:
BUTTON UP SHIRTS - A must have staple in any man's wardrobe (i wish i had one of each style he ever made). A Paul Smith shirt is the perfect marriage of quality and style offered in classic fabrics or original fun prints, very easy to fit into any man's style and can be dressed up or down for any occasion from business to pleasure. The first time my eyes landed on them , it changed the way i dressed forever......

BAGS and WALLETS - Made in either leather or printed canvas, these items really stand out but in a clever and sophisticated way. I have both (thanks to my mother in law and birthday gifts), the signature striped leather wallet (like the one below) and a canvas messenger bag printed with stamps that are rearranged in the shape of the British flag .

SHOES - I'll just say that for my 40th birthday I asked for a pair of Paul Smith boots.... I think that says it all! ...did i mention my obsession for shoes before????
